Jewellery Care Guide

To keep your jewellery looking beautiful, learn what to avoid and how to care for your precious metals, diamonds and natural gemstones by reading through the care instructions below:

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Caring For and Wearing Your Jewellery

  • To help protect the durability and high-quality of your jewellery, make sure to remove your jewellery when you shower, bathe or engage in heavy exercise, particularly when swimming in the sea or a chlorinated swimming pool.
  • All of our gemstones are natural and therefore can be vulnerable to absorbing dirt and to chipping. Settings may also become loose over-time.
  • Avoid spraying perfume, applying creams or any other liquids directly onto your jewellery.
  • Keep your jewellery away from extreme temperatures, humidity or sunlight.
  • Avoid wearing your jewellery when using bleach, cleaning products and other chemicals.

How to Store Your Jewellery

  • We highly recommend that you store your jewellery in the original Monica Vinader packaging provided or another suitably lined box or soft pouch and place a small packet of desiccant crystals in the packaging if you live in a humid climate.
  • Ideally store your pieces of jewellery separately, so that they don't rub together or become tangled.

Cleaning Precious Metals

  • To keep your jewellery looking radiant and to remove the build-up of dirt and premature tarnish we recommend using our own Monica Vinader polishing cloth (available on request). Rub the piece in one direction rather than circular motions.
  • A Silver cleaner can be used to clean Sterling Silver pieces but not 18ct Rose or Yellow Gold Vermeil.
  • Do not use tissue paper or paper towels to clean metal as they can cause scratching.
  • You can use the same Monica Vinader polishing cloth (available on request) to look after your 14k Gold pieces. Gold is a much harder metal than Silver and therefore more durable.

Cleaning Gemstones

  • Since many natural gemstones can be quite delicate, hot water, harsh chemicals and cleaners should be avoided at all times.
  • Clean your gemstones with a clean, soft, damp cloth after wearing.
  • Very porous stones such as Turquoise, Howlite and Emerald should be cleaned using an untreated, dry, soft cloth only.
  • Do not use tissue paper or paper towels to clean gemstones as they can cause scratching.

Cleaning Corded Bracelets

  • The best way to clean the thread on your corded friendship bracelets is to occasionally wash them with a soft sponge and mild soap in lukewarm water.

How to Prevent Tarnishing

  • All of our Sterling Silver products are protected with an anti-tarnish solution to help prevent tarnish but this may eventually wear with time.
  • Silver tarnishes rapidly when exposed to certain substances in our everyday lives so we recommend caring for, wearing and storing your jewellery as mentioned above.

Nickel

Nickel is a trace metal which can be found in any precious metals such as silver or gold, it is also classified as an allergen.

  • We do not add Nickel to Monica Vinader jewellery, however trace amounts can be found in some of the metals used in our pieces.
  • We have a comprehensive programme to test for all trace metals which are potentially harmful. This is conducted by an independent laboratory to ensure they are below the legal standard, however, a very small number of people who are hypersensitive may suffer a reaction. Please inform our Customer Care team if this affects you.

Our 5-Year Warranty

Every hand-crafted Monica Vinader piece comes with our 5-Year Warranty.

  • Whether you have accidentally scratched a pendant charm or want your ring resized or replated, we will repair your jewellery free of charge with a valid proof of purchase. NO QUESTIONS ASKED!
  • After 5 years or if you cannot find your proof of purchase, you can take advantage of our Lifetime Repair Service. (The 5 Year Warranty and Lifetime repair service are not applicable for any items purchased during one of our Sample Sale events).

To get started visit our 'What Is The 5 Year Warranty And How Do I Make A Claim On It?' page and simply follow the instructions for the option that best describes how you purchased or received your piece.

Why Is My Jewellery Tarnished?

All Monica Vinader jewellery is crafted from Sterling Silver. Fine Silver is generally too soft for producing luxury jewellery and so it is alloyed with other metals to ensure all of our pieces are both long lasting and just as beautiful.

Silver is a very stable element, however the metals it is alloyed with can react to their surroundings creating a tarnish. This occurs particularly when the piece is exposed to water, chemicals, high temperatures or humidity.

To keep your jewellery looking its best please
follow our care instructions.

If your jewellery does become tarnished you can return your piece to us and we will repair this FOR FREE under our 5-Year Warranty. If you are outside of the warranty we are still able to offer you our Lifetime Repair Service for your jewellery, for a fee.

To get started visit our
'What Is The 5 Year Warranty And How Do I Make A Claim On It?' page and simply follow the instructions for the option that best describes how you purchased or received your piece.

Can I get two pieces of permanent jewellery in one appointment?

Please book our 20 minute appointment option to ensure there is enough time to bespoke fit each piece.

Are there any age restrictions?

If you are under 16, please bring a parent or guardian with you to your appointment

We do not offer permanent jewellery to anyone under 10 years of age for safety reasons.

How much does it cost?

The price of your permanent jewellery piece will depend on the chain you select and if you chose to add any charms. Each chain and charm is priced individually. You can find our prices here. There is no additional service charge for permanent jewellery.

If I need a longer/shorter length of chain do I pay more/less?

No - there is one set cost for each piece, based on the chain you choose and your wrist size. You can opt for a double wrapped bracelet for a permanently stacked look (this is one piece of chain wrapped around your wrist twice to create a stacked look).

Can I add a clasp to my permanent jewellery?

Our permanent jewellery range is designed to achieve a seamless look. We do not currently offer the option to add a clasp. You can find similar pieces in our 14k Solid Gold Range which have clasps if you prefer this option.

Can I add a charm to my permanent jewellery piece later?

Yes! Just book a regular welding appointment and we will add your selected charms. If you are looking for a particular charm, please call ahead to confirm availability.

Does it hurt?

Not at all! A small leather pad is placed against the skin as an extra safety precaution, but even if the machine came into contact with the skin, it wouldn’t hurt

Can I gift a welding experience?

Yes . Our gift cards are the perfect way to gift a welding experience. You can purchase a gift card from our website or in store. These can be used to pay for your permanent jewellery experience.

Can I purchase permanent jewellery online and bring it in store to be welded?

Due to the bespoke nature of this service, you will only be able to purchase your chain and charms in store. If you have your eye on a particular chain or charm, please call ahead to confirm availability

How do I take care of my permanent jewellery?

For safety, if your permanent jewellery gets caught on something and pulled, it will snap (you wouldn’t want to hurt yourself!). Take care not to catch the permanent jewellery on anything.

If your permanent jewellery becomes tangled with something (such as other jewellery or a hair band), carefully separate it.  Applying strong tension to your permanent jewellery may cause it to snap.

To keep your permanent jewellery looking its best, use our cleaning kit from time to time to give it some TLC. Gently use a polishing cloth to restore its shine.

If you are in contact with strong chemicals frequently, your weld point may weaken over time and your permanent jewellery may come off. Activities such as swimming and using a hot tub are particularly likely to cause this issue. Take a moment to ensure your permanent jewellery is secure before and after these sorts of activities. If you are concerned, visit us in store and we can re-weld your permanent jewellery for you.

Can I refund or exchange my permanent jewellery?

Your permanent jewellery is bespoke and personally tailored to you. For this reason, permanent jewellery is not included in our usual returns and exchanges policy

Is the permanent jewellery covered by your 5 Year Warranty and Lifetime Repair Service?

Yes! Our permanent jewellery is covered by our 5 Year Warranty and Lifetime Repair Service. If you need further assistance, visit us in store or contact our Customer Care team.

My permanent jewellery came off, can you reweld it for me?

Yes! If you still have your chain, we will re-weld this for you, free of charge, during your 5 Year Warranty period. Visit us in store for further assistance, or contact our Customer Care team.

How can I remove my permanent jewellery?

You can remove your permanent jewellery by using a strong pair of scissors against the jump ring Alternatively, visit us in store and we can remove it for you.

Will the permanent jewellery cause problems at the airport?

Our permanent jewellery is made from fine solid gold, so it should not cause you any problems going through airport security. Our team has been through airport security many times without any issues.  If you do need to remove your jewellery, use a strong pair of scissors on the jumpring. Keep hold of your chain, and you can visit us in store to have it rewelded.

Can I have my permanent jewellery re-welded if I have to remove it for a medical scan or other medical reason?

As we use fine quality solid gold, in most scenarios you will not need to remove your permanent jewellery (for example for an MRI). If you are asked to remove your jewellery, use a strong pair of scissors on the jumpring. Keep hold of your chain, and you can visit us in store to have it rewelded
